ENhanced TAGging (EnTAG)

The HRU (Tudhope and Moon) collaborated in the ENhanced TAGging (EnTAG) project, funded under the JISC Repositories and Preservation Programme. The project was led by UKOLN and the main project website, with documentation, the final reports and list of publications and links to a live demonstrator developed at Glamorgan, is maintained at UKOLN.

EnTAg investigated the combination and comparison of controlled and folksonomy approaches to support resource discovery in repositories and digital collections. The project evaluated the combination of both approaches in the context of repositories and digital collections.

The aim was to investigate whether vocabulary control and the use of an established Knowledge Organization System (for EnTag, the Dewey Decimal Classification and ACM Computing Classificiation were employed in different demonstrators) can assist in moving free social tagging beyond personal bookmarking to aid resource discovery. The project demonstrated use of tagging in different environments and provided an interface that enables use of a traditional classification scheme to enhance free form tags.

Project partners
UKOLN, University of Bath (lead)
University of Glamorgan, Hypermedia Research Unit
Intute (MIMAS at The University of Manchester)
Science and Technology Facilities Council, The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Non-funded supporting partners are:
Royal School Library and Information Science, Denmark
Department of Information Studies, University College London
OCLC Office of Research, USA

Glamorgan’s role was to design and develop a demonstrator which operated in two modes: one allowing social tagging of an extract of Intute resources and the other mode additionally offering tagging suggestions from the Knowledge Organization System. This allowed a comparative evaluation of the two approaches. See the main project website demonstrator page for more details.

A paper discussing results from EnTag was one of the nominations for best paper at JCDL 2009 – see Publications: (Golub K, Jones C, Matthews B, Puzon B, Nielsen M, Moon J, Tudhope D. 2009). This strand of work continued in the tagging suggestion web services developed for the PERTAINS project.
